The Prophetic Legacy Continues
Divine wisdom chose the path of guidance through Prophets and Messengers, individuals raised from among the people themselves. These appointed guides exemplified love and upheld the loftiest moral values, demonstrating through their actions the epitome of virtue. Their guidance was freely given, extended to both individuals and communities.
God's Guidance through Prophets
In the tapestry of history, we find echoes of this divine directive. Descendants of Noah (AS) bore witness to this call:
"Then We raised another generation after them, and sent to them a messenger from among themselves, ˹declaring,˺ 'Worship God ˹alone˺. You have no god other than Him. Will you not then fear ˹Him˺?' But the chiefs of his people - who disbelieved, denied the meeting ˹with God˺ in the Hereafter, and were spoiled by the worldly luxuries We had provided for them - said ˹to the masses˺,"
The Moral Exemplars Among Humanity
In retaliation to the teachings of prophets, find the arguments put forth by these leaders to mislead their people echoed down through the ages:
“This is only a human like you. He eats what you eat, and drinks what you drink. And if you ˹ever˺ obey a human like yourselves, then you would certainly be losers. Does he promise you that once you are dead and reduced to dust and bones, you will be brought forth ˹alive˺? Impossible, simply impossible is what you are promised! There is nothing beyond our worldly life. We die, others are born, and none will be resurrected. He is no more than a man who has fabricated a lie about God, and we will never believe in Him.”
Do these arguments not resonate with those of Noah's time and even the disbelievers of the 21st century? And what transpired when the masses decisively rejected the messenger?
The Messenger implored, “My Lord! Help me, because they have denied ˹me˺.” God's reply came, “Soon they will be truly regretful.” And then, the ˹mighty˺ blast overtook them with justice, reducing them to rubble. So away with the wrongdoing people!
Successively, God sent His messengers. Yet, every time, as a messenger emerged among his people, they rejected him. Thus, God decreed their stories to serve as cautionary tales. So away with those who persist in disbelief!
Between the era of Noah (AS) and Abraham (AS), two Messengers of God arose from the descendants of Noah (AS) - Eber (Hud) and Shela (Saleh/Salih).(AS).
Prophet Eber (Hud) (AS) and the Nation of Aad
The Powerful Tribe of Aad
The tribes of Aad, formidable and robust, thrived in the Arabian deserts, establishing a prosperous civilization. Around 2500 B.C. to 2200 B.C., God appointed Eber (Hud) as their Messenger.
Eber (Hud) conveyed the essence of monotheism, but his teachings were met with conclusive rejection. The dialogue between the Messenger and his people, sourced from divine revelation, unfurled:
Eber (Hud) (AS): Messenger’s Warning
Prophet Eber (Hud) implored, “Do you find it astonishing that a reminder should come to you from your Lord through one of your own so he may warn you? Remember that He made you successors after the people of Noah and increased you greatly in stature. So remember God’s favors, so you may be successful.”
The Dialogue of Truth and Denial
Their response was laden with skepticism, “Have you come to us so that we would worship God alone and abandon what our forefathers used to worship? Then bring us what you threaten us with, if what you say is true!”
Divine Retribution and Lessons Learned
The Wrath of Nature Unleashed
Prophet Eber (Hud) warned them of the impending consequences. In response, God unleashed an unimaginable storm - a relentless tempest that raged for seven days and eight nights, reducing those stalwart men to hollow trunks.
Crimes of Aad and Their Consequences
Their crimes, enumerated by God, were many:
- Disbelief, polytheism, and idolatry
- Arrogance stemming from their strength
- Stubbornness in the face of counsel
- Rejection of God's messengers
- Obstruction of others' obedience to noble prophets
- Building elevated structures on roads to mock passers-by
The crimes of Aad included disbelief, arrogance, stubbornness, rejection of messengers, and obstructing others from obeying noble prophets - all leading to the collective torment upon the entire nation and ultimately painful demise.
Prophet Shela (Saleh) (AS) and the People of Thamud
After Aad's obliteration, Prophet Eber (Hud) (AS) and the remaining faithful sought refuge in a cave, left the desert and eventually resettled in Al-Hijr (Median Saleh / Hegr), a distant enclave in ancient Arabia. This era, spanning 2000 B.C. to 1900 B.C., was near the time of the emergence of Prophet Abraham.
Thamud: A Prosperous Civilization
The Thamuds, affluent and powerful, etched their dwellings into hills and plains. Yet, they lost their moral compass, spiraling into polytheism. God raised Prophet Shela (Saleh/Salih) (AS), an exemplar of righteousness, to guide them back to the straight path.
Prophet Saleh (AS): Beacon of Righteousness
Prophet Saleh (AS) urged the people to worship God alone and warned them of the fate of their ancestors. When they asked for a miracle, God presented a she-camel as a sign of prophethood.
The She-Camel and the Ultimate Test
They demanded a miracle, and God presented a colossal she-camel as a sign of prophethood and a test of their faith.
The exchange of words between Prophet Saleh (AS) and his people, according to Quran is interpreted here, in italicized text, unfolded:
"And to the people of Thamûd, We sent their brother Ṣâliḥ. He said, 'O my people! Worship God. You have no god other than Him. He ˹is the One Who˺ produced you from the earth and settled you on it. So seek His forgiveness and turn to Him in repentance. Surely my Lord is Ever Near, All-Responsive ˹to prayers˺.'
”Their retort was laden with doubt, “O Ṣâliḥ! We truly had high hopes in you before this. How dare you forbid us to worship what our forefathers had worshiped? We are certainly in alarming doubt about what you are inviting us to”
Prophet Saleh responded, “O my people! Consider if I stand on a clear proof from my Lord and He has blessed me with mercy from Him. Who could help me against God if I were to disobey Him? You would only contribute to my doom.”
Heedless, they slaughtered the she-camel, earning Prophet Saleh’s warning, “You have ˹only˺ three ˹more˺ days to enjoy life in your homes—this is an unfailing promise!” As God’s decree unfurled, Prophet Saleh and the faithful were spared, while the disbelievers met a swift end.
Thus, Thamud denied their Lord, and away with Thamud!
The Rise and Fall of Thamud
The Thamuds' moral and religious decay led to their destruction, leaving behind a cautionary tale for humanity.
Crimes That Led to Their Demise
The Thamuds' crimes included disbelief, polytheism, and idolatry, ultimately culminating in their obliteration.
Prophet Hud (AS) and Prophet Saleh (AS) serve as pivotal figures bridging the era from Noah (AS) to Abraham (AS). It’s imperative to clarify that Prophet 'SALEH' of Thamud and 'METHUSELAH' are distinct individuals. Methuselah was the son of Prophet Enoch (Idris), and the grandfather of Noah, predating Prophet Saleh by over 2000 years.
