The Unlettered Prophet: Muhammad ﷺ PBUH
Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) May God bless him and his family and grant them peace, also known as an 'Nabi al Ummi' or unlettered prophet ﷺ, was kept away from formal education by Allah. Despite lacking the ability to read or write, he possessed outstanding noble character from childhood, making him the most impeccable individual in society. It is apparent, Allah Himself groomed, educated, and inspired him from an early age, preparing him as the supreme model prophet and messenger for all of humanity.
Even before prophethood, he earned the names of As-Sadiq and Al-Ameen (Truthful and Honest) due to his virtue and lofty conduct. Enjoying the complete trust of his people, he was regarded as an impartial judge for resolving disputes. His marriage at the age of 25 to Hazrat Khadeja R.A reflected his commitment to virtuous practices, distancing himself from polytheistic influences.
Before turning 40, he frequently sought solitude in the Cave Hira, meditating and worshiping Allah with deep concentration. During one such session, the archangel Gabriel (AS) appeared for the first time, revealing the first five verses of the Quran (96:1 to 96:5). This marked the initiation of Allah SWT's revelation of the Holy Quran to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in 610 CE.
The revealed verses include an injunction to read in the name of the Lord who created humans from a clinging clot, emphasizing the role of knowledge and education in the divine plan. (Quran 96:1-5)."
Read, ˹O Prophet,˺ in the Name of your Lord Who created—created humans from a clinging clot (the embryo resembles a leech) Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous, Who taught (to write) by the pen—taught humanity what they knew not.
Listen (40 seconds) In Arabic, the Recitation of the first 5 Verses of Quran
These Verses 1-5 of Chapter 96 are known to be the first ever revealed of the Quran. The Prophet (ﷺ) was retreating into cave Hira on the outskirts of Mecca in 610 CE., when the angel Gabriel appeared to him, squeezing him tightly and ordering him to read. Since the Prophet (ﷺ) was unlettered, he responded, “I cannot read.” Ultimately, Gabriel taught him: “Read in the Name of your Lord ”
Some scholars believe that this encounter is the fulfillment of Isaiah 29:12, which states, “Then the book will be given to the one who isn’t learned, saying, ‘Read this.’ And he will say, ‘I cannot read.’”
There are several more Biblical glaring facts; if we cast a glimpse at the life of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ PBUH, we will discover the amazing truth that those Biblical points perfectly tally with his mission and confirm beyond doubt that he is the Comforter Promised by Jesus PBUH.
Pointed and repeated reference to the coming of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) is made in the Bible. (See Deuteronomy 18: 19; Matthew 21: 33-46; John 1: 19-25; 14: 15-17, 25-30; 15: 25-26; 16: 7-15.)

The Culmination of the Abrahamic Prophetic Mission
The Sons of Prophet Abraham PBUH
In preceding articles of Musafir's series, we revisited how Prophet Ismael PBUH, alongside his father Prophet Abraham PBUH, originated the inhabitants of the barren region of Makkah and reconstructed the ancient House of Allah. Upon completing the construction, both prophets, Abraham and Ishmael (PBUT), offered a heartfelt prayer to Almighty Allah (Quran 2:128-129):
Our Lord! Make us both ˹fully˺ submit to You and from our descendants a nation that will submit to you. Show us our rituals, and turn to us in grace. You are truly the Acceptor of Repentance, Most Merciful. Our Lord! Raise from among them a messenger who will recite to them Your revelations, teach them the Book and wisdom, and purify them. Indeed, You ˹alone˺ are the Almighty, All-Wise.”
Allah SWT, after 2500 years, in accordance with His Master Plan embedded in the Preserved Tablets, accepted the prayers of His two Mighty Prophets (father and son) and raised among their descendants His last and final Messenger, Muhammad ﷺ PBUH, in the same place, Makkah.
The prayer of Prophets Abraham (AS) and Ishmael (AS) outlined three major tasks for the messenger: a) to recite and interpret Allah’s revelations (verses of the Quran) to his nation (blessed companions); b) to teach them knowledge of Divine Laws and Wisdom; and 3) to purify them.
Prophet Moses (AS) had prior Insight about Unlettered Prophet
Recall when Prophet Moses PBUH, along with 70 people, ascended the mountain to seek forgiveness for his nation. Allah granted His repentance and informed about the future nation of Unlettered (Ummi) Prophet (Muhammad ﷺ PBUH). It confirmed to have described in the Torah and Gospel, the prophecies, signs and characteristics of the unlettered prophet (Muhammad ﷺ PBUH) for forthcoming generations of Sons of Israel (Jews and Christians) to recognise and follow him, when he arrives. Quran 7:155-157:
Moses chose seventy men from among his people for Our appointment and, when they were seized by an earthquake (For asking Moses to make Allah visible to them), he cried, “My Lord! Had You willed, You could have destroyed them long ago, and me as well. Will You destroy us for what the foolish among us have done? This is only a test from You—by which You allow whoever you will to stray and guide whoever You will. You are our Guardian. So forgive us and have mercy on us. You are the best forgiver. 7:155
Ordain for us what is good in this life and the next. Indeed, we have turned to You ˹in repentance˺.” Allah replied, “I will inflict My torment on whoever I will. But My mercy encompasses everything. I will ordain mercy for those who shun evil, pay alms-tax, and believe in Our revelations. 7:156
They are˺ the ones who follow the Messenger, the unlettered Prophet, whose description they find in their Torah and the Gospel. He commands them to do good and forbids them from evil, permits for them what is lawful and forbids to them what is impure, and relieves them from their burdens and the shackles that bound them. ˹Only˺ those who believe in him, honor and support him, and follow the light sent down to him will be successful. 7:157
Debate Among Scholars of Abrahamic Faiths
Muslim scholars cite various verses from the Bible as examples of the description of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ PBUH, including Deuteronomy 18:15-18, 33:2, Isaiah 42, and John 14:16. The name of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ PBUH appears in the Gospel of Barnabas, deemed apocryphal by some Christian authorities.
Scholars unanimously agree that all religious scriptures and divine books, except the Quran, have undergone interpolation, corruption, addition, omission, or changes, leading to the emergence of a lot of versions of the Bible.
A debate persists as to how and when the elite rabbis and clerics in the different societies of the Children of Israel during different stages of time altered the original teachings and guidance, manipulating the Divine Holy Books of Torah and Gospel to serve their personal or state interests.
Allah, as committed, has protected and preserved His Words in their original texts in the Quran (the Final Testament) that serves as the standard touchstone, the Criterion and the Decisive Authority to clear ambiguities created in previous unpreserved holy books. Now it is the job of the people of the books (Torah and Gospel) to clear ambiguities and fairly distinguish the truth after examining it through the Quran.
The Universal Mission: Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as the Messenger for All Humanity
In the Quranic verse 34:28, Allah addresses Prophet Muhammad ﷺ PBUH, revealing a profound message that transcends time and boundaries:

The universality of Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ mission underscores the timeless and inclusive nature of his guidance, encompassing the entirety of humanity.

The Ideal Economic Model: Lessons from Seventh Century Madinah
Introduction:
In the quest for an economic model that prioritizes the welfare and wellness of people, it is fascinating to turn back the pages of history to the seventh century CE in Madinah. It was during this time that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ PBUH introduced and implemented a statutory economic model that laid the foundation for a just and equitable society. This model encompassed key elements that not only promoted economic prosperity but also focused on social well-being.
The setting-up of a market initially in the camp, following the immediate establishment of 'Masjid Nabawi' in Madinah, marked the second significant action taken by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ PBUH, underscoring the crucial importance of economic activity alongside the spiritual and communal aspects of the community's development.
Key Elements of the Madinah Economic Model:
1). Free Market Economics:
The economic model in Madinah emphasized the principles of a free market, allowing individuals to engage in trade and commerce with minimal intervention. This approach encouraged entrepreneurship and innovation, fostering economic growth.
2). Tax-Free Market:
One notable feature was the absence of any taxes in the Market. The tax-free market created an environment where individuals could retain their earnings in full, promoting financial stability and incentivizing economic activity.
3). No Middle Man:
The elimination of unnecessary intermediaries streamlined economic transactions. This not only reduced costs but also ensured a fair distribution of resources, benefiting both producers and consumers.
4). Interest-Free Capital:
The economic model prohibited the charging of interest on capital, promoting ethical financial practices. This zero interest approach aimed to prevent exploitation and create a more inclusive economic system. Thus, instead of concentrating wealth among the capitalists, spreading it among the masses ensures creating a prosperous society.
5). Evolving Monetized Economy:
Madinah witnessed the evolution of a monetized economy. This facilitated a more organized and efficient exchange system and induction of golden coins called Dinar. It ensures maintain the exchange of equal value in trading.
6). Limited Barter Trade:
Barter trade was allowed, but kept limited to six essential items in the market those days, namely gold, silver, oats, dates, wheat, and salt. This list ensured a focus on vital commodities, simplifying trade and ensuring the fair exchange to be carried out expediently and of equal value.
7). Introduction of Weights and Measures:
To enhance transparency and fairness, the economic model introduced standardized weights and measures. This ensured that transactions were conducted on a level playing field, preventing fraudulent practices.
8). Clear Guidance on Production and Use of Capital:
The economic model provided clear guidance on production processes and the utilization of capital. This clarity helped in optimizing resource allocation and preventing wastage.
9). Conditional Trading (Sale and Purchase):
Trading, both sale and purchase, was conditional on taking possession of goods. This practice discouraged speculative activities and ensured that transactions were grounded in real economic value.
Mudarabah Partnership:
Within the economic model of seventh century Madinah, the concept of Mudarabah Partnership played a pivotal role. This form of partnership involved the collaboration of individuals with financial resources (Rab-ul-Maal) and those contributing labor and expertise (Mudarib). This partnership model inspired Europe and they adopted it.
The Mudarabah structure exemplified the essence of shared risk and reward, as the profits generated from business activities were distributed according to pre-agreed terms. This partnership model not only encouraged cooperation and community spirit but also ensured a fair and equitable distribution of returns based on the active contribution of each partner.
The emphasis on Mudarabah reflected a sophisticated understanding of economic collaboration, aligning financial interests with active participation. This approach not only provided a framework for ethical business practices but also contributed to the development of a more inclusive and socially responsible economic system.
Conclusion:
The economic model implemented in seventh century Madinah, guided by the principles introduced by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ PBUH, serves as an intriguing historical example. Its emphasis on free market economics, tax-free markets, fair trade practices, and ethical financial principles of no interest provides valuable insights for contemporary discussions on creating an economic system that prioritizes the well-being of individuals and communities. As we navigate the complexities of the modern world, these foundational principles offer a timeless guide for shaping an economic model that fosters prosperity and inclusivity.

In the grand tapestry of divine wisdom, Allah SWT orchestrated a master plan, consecutively sending 124,000 prophets from Adam PBUH to Muhammad ﷺ PBUH. Each prophet, including Muhammad ﷺ, shared the common task of inviting, teaching, and preaching the belief in the One and Only God, Allah, to their respective communities. Their prophetic lives served as exemplary models, demonstrating the righteous path through impeccable moral values in their societies.
The distinctive mission of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, as the Seal of Prophethood, extended beyond the common tasks assigned to his predecessors. The Quran affirms this divine triumph in three distinct chapters:
In Surah As-Saff (61:9), the Quran emphatically addresses the issue of idolatry, condemning those who combine the service of others with the worship of Allah and incorporate foreign beliefs into the pure monotheistic religion. This verse underscores the refusal of some individuals to recognize that the entire fabric of life is founded on the obedience and guidance of the One God. These are the ones who insist on worshiping any deity of their choosing and building their beliefs, morals, and civilization on diverse philosophies and doctrines.
He it is Who has sent forth the Messenger with the Guidance and the True Religion that He may make it prevail over all religion, however those that associate aught with Allah in His Divinity might dislike this. (61:9)
The verse clarifies that the Messenger of Allah is not sent to negotiate or compromise with such individuals. Instead, the primary objective is to establish the guidance and true religion that has been bestowed by Allah, ensuring its supremacy over all other religions and ways of life. This mission is non-negotiable, regardless of whether the disbelievers and polytheists accept or resist it. The same declaration is reiterated in Surah At-Taubah (9:33) and Surah Al-Fath (48:28), emphasizing the unwavering nature of the Messenger's mission to prevail the truth, irrespective of opposition or support from those who resist it.
The World in the 7th Century CE: A Precursor to Divine Intervention
In the 7th century CE, the global landscape witnessed a significant divergence from the original divine commandments, particularly among the Children of Israel and those under their influence. By this time, the labels 'Judaism' and 'Christianity' had been co-opted by privileged classes, who manipulated these divine religions to serve personal and political agendas. Despite Allah being the ultimate owner of the holy books, including Torah, Psalm, and Injeel, the custodians of these scriptures, primarily among the Children of Israel, had altered and distorted the texts, keeping them out of reach for common people. The translational rendition of the authentic message presented an avenue for potential distortion within the translated iteration of the text.
Access to the sacred texts was restricted for centuries, and the common masses were compelled to adhere to dogmas dictated by the privileged classes. The interpretations of these doctrines, often serving the interests of the elite, persisted for centuries, shaping the belief systems of societies.
Simultaneously, in other regions of the world, notable philosophers and thinkers had made profound contributions during the preceding 1200 years (600 BCE to 600 CE). Figures like Socrates, Buqrat, Plato, Confucius, followers of Taoism, Buddha, and proponents of Jainism had left indelible marks on the philosophical landscape. However, this era marked the conclusion, the climax of these philosophical thoughts.
It was against this backdrop, at the zenith of human philosophical history, that Allah, in His infinite wisdom, chose to send the last and final Universal Messenger, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, to guide all of humanity. The divine intervention sought to correct the deviations from the original commandments, providing a universal and unadulterated message for mankind.
Geographically, the Arabian Peninsula, the center of the world and the cradle of this divine message, was surrounded by the sea on its southern, eastern, and western fronts. To the north, the land was divided into two regions: Iraqi Arabia and Syrian Arabia. These northern lands were then under the rule of two dominant powers of the time—the Roman Empire in the west and the Persian Empire in the east.
The emergence of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in this strategic location Makkah marked a pivotal moment in history. It was not only a correction of theological deviations but also a culmination of divine guidance at a time when the philosophical musings of great thinkers were waning. The Arabian Peninsula, at the crossroads of empires and cultures, became the epicenter for the final and comprehensive message that would guide humanity toward a path of truth, justice, and righteousness.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: Illuminating the 7th Century - A Divine Revolution Reshaping History
In the majestic tapestry of history, during the 7th century CE, the Arabian Peninsula found itself ensconced in profound obscurity, a realm devoid of divine guidance for an unfathomable stretch of nearly 2500 years. Then, as if orchestrated by the hand of the Almighty, a radiant revolution unfolded—a divine spectacle that spanned over 22 years of prophethood, illuminating the very fabric of Arabia with the brilliance of the Divine System, the Religion of Truth.
In this celestial reality, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emerged as the conduit of divine grace, a vessel through which the celestial light permeated the darkness that had gripped the region for tens of centuries. His prophetic journey unfolded with miraculous precision, and by Allah's grace, he disseminated the radiant beams of divine knowledge and wisdom. Functioning as the Universal Messenger, he not only guided the noble Sahaba but, through them, extended the luminous tendrils of enlightenment to the farthest reaches of the globe.
The transformative impact of his mission transcended geographical boundaries, reaching into the heart of Europe, the far-eastern realms, and the far-western landscapes of Asia and Africa. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, in his divine role, became the harbinger of enlightenment, dispelling the shadows of ignorance and ushering in an era of profound societal metamorphosis. The legacy of his profound journey resonates through time, a testament to the celestial illumination that he bestowed upon the world.
This Perfect System, introduced for the first time in the world's history, embodies socio-economic justice, respect, equality, fairness, and justice for all segments of society for all times. It transcends discrimination of caste, creed, sect, complexion, and tribe. As proclaimed in a sentence taken from Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:3) that is believed to have been revealed in the later part of the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) time in Medina
"Today I have perfected your faith for you, completed My favor upon you, and chosen Islam as your way." (5:3)
The Enduring Legacy of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and His Companions
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the Seal of Prophethood, stands as a beacon of divine guidance, and his life exemplifies a paradigm of unwavering faith, resilience, and justice. His companions, the Sahaba (or Disciples), played an integral role in shaping the Divine Legacy, the name , establishing a model state governed by the principles of Allah’s commandments.
A Legacy of Governance:
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, uniquely among messengers, left a legacy beyond his prophetic teachings—a fully functioning state governed by his companions. For three decades after his passing, the Sahaba, guided by the divine principles of impartial justice, upheld the Islamic system for the benefit of all segments of the humanity, irrespective of belief.
The Quran emphasizes the exemplary nature of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:
This historical affirmation is found in the Quranic verses:
Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example for whoever has hope in Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah often. When the believers saw the enemy alliance, they said, “This is what Allah and His Messenger had promised us. The promise of Allah and His Messenger has come true.” And this only increased them in faith and submission. 33:21; 33:22
Exemplary Lives:
The lives of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions (RA) were paragons of godly character, meant to guide believers until the Day of Judgement. Through their actions, they demonstrated seeking Allah’s pleasure, achieving success in the Hereafter, remembering Allah, perseverance in difficult times, reliance on Allah's promises, the attainment of ever-increasing faith, and the fulfillment of vows taken before Allah.
Under the most challenging circumstances, the companions remained steadfast, embodying Islamic thought and character. Their unyielding commitment to the truth, even in the face of trials, exemplified the strength of their faith. They became a living testament to the divine principle that decisions by Allah often come after testing the believers.
The Quran affirms the status of the companions (RA):
All Mighty Allah revealed about the companions of the prophet ﷺ: -
Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. And those with him are firm with the disbelievers and compassionate with one another. You see them bowing and prostrating ˹in prayer˺, seeking Allah’s bounty and pleasure. The sign ˹of brightness can be seen˺ on their faces from the trace of prostrating ˹in prayer˺. This is their description in the Torah. And their parable in the Gospel is that of a seed that sprouts its ˹tiny˺ branches, making it strong. Then it becomes thick, standing firmly on its stem, to the delight of the planters—in this way Allah makes the believers a source of dismay for the disbelievers. To those of them who believe and do good, Allah has promised forgiveness and a great reward. 48:29
Their description in the Torah and the parable in the Gospel liken them to a resilient seed sprouting branches, standing firm to dismay disbelievers. For those among them who believe and do good, Allah promises forgiveness and a great reward.
Indeed, those who believe and do good—they are the best of ˹all˺ beings. Their reward with their Lord will be Gardens of Eternity, under which rivers flow, to stay there forever and ever. Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him. This is ˹only˺ for those in awe of their Lord. 98:7; 98:8
The Timeless Legacy:
The enduring legacy of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions serves as a timeless guide for Humanity. Their lives, etched with principles of justice, faith, and unwavering commitment to Allah, remain a source of inspiration. The divine precept of testing believers under challenging conditions continues to shape the faithful, fostering a distinction between true faith and mere claims.
As believers reflect upon the Quranic verses describing the companions, they find an eternal model of excellence. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions, through their dedication and unwavering commitment, have left an indelible mark on Islamic history, illuminating the path for generations to come. Their legacy beckons believers to embody the principles of justice, compassion, and faith, ensuring a timeless connection with Allah.
